SALT FLY TRIP by Stephen Martin
A break in the weather late Friday afternoon lead to a mass launching one bay back and a quick ride to the mussel beds. Quite a few snapper were caught on bait but not much fly fishing went on. And to stop the joy of some at the next meeting, yes I once again added to the burly trail as my Sea legs tablets hadn't kicked in yet. Saturdays forecast was dismal, gale force winds and squalls from late morning, but once again the forecasters got it wrong. We had a full days fishing with only some light rain. The catch with fly rods was still minimal with bait fishing pulling up lots of fish, mainly under sized snapper, in the same area that was unresponsive to the fly. Although Dave Gribben was having no trouble getting snapper on the fly. Sunday dawned a lot brighter but the forecast winds had arrived and nobody wanted to chance their luck and life in the conditions, so it was pack up and head home early for all. The sweep was split into three 1) Longest Kahawai on fly……..Stephen Martin 2) Longest Snapper on fly……..Ronnie Gilling 3) Longest other fish on fly…….Gavin Drake |
