Lake Rotoiti - Gisborne Pt. Trip.

Four of us survived this weekend expedition to Gisborne Point. It was a
tremendous learning curve for experienced and inexperienced alike.
We learned to cast in cold south and south-westerly winds (How cold? -7 degrees C, Sunday morning, according to TV One News.) at the few sheltered spots that that were available and in water conditions that at one spot wefis hed was more suitable for surfing than fishing. It was hard going, with fish being caught around us, but not taking much interest in what we were tempting them with. It was a opportunity to talk with and learn from the locals who fish these waters regularly, and also saw some of us participate in a Fish and Game Survey of the Lakes.

Fishing opportunities started late Friday afternoon and went through to
mid-afternoon Sunday. We fished Ruato Bay and Waiiti Stream on Lake Rotoiti and Te Pohue Bay off Hongi`s Track at Lake Rotoehu, as these were the most sheltered spots. Alec Bennett landed and released the only keepable fish, 2 1/2 lb, although Bryan Beecher did take a 4 lb’er home. We had a great learning and sharing weekend together, but were disappointed by the lack of fish caught and landed that make these weekends exciting.

Thanks guys for your company. (Oh Bryan, next time try to leave your house behind when you go fishing.).
Gordon.
