Mike Holmes Eel
Fisherman extraordinaire Mike Holmes Eel Fisherman extraordinaire It’s a bit different to have a speaker who doesn’t talk
about some aspect of trout fishing and while Mike Holmes after catches
Browns and a few Rainbows, his interest is centered on Eels. Mike has been
fishing commercially for eels for over 14 years, having started off as a
fill in job for few years. This process is entirely voluntarily paid for by the
commercial fishers. It was a extremely interesting talk and all those who
attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Mike will hopefully back next
year to talk about a fishing trip he recently made to Southern Africa and
we look forward to hearing from him again
As the meeting fell on a holiday Monday we decided to have a low key meeting with various things happening around the hall. Derek & Dave tied flies, John looked at rigging your line for various fishing methods, Lance showed of various videos Bryan Beecher had an online demonstration of the club's website and Nevin & Stephen ran a trip table. There was also casting practice out on the riverbank till the drizzle drove everyone in. All those who turned up had a good time and got to share information and stories.
Nigel McRae, North Island Co-coordinator from the New Zealand Coast guard. His is an excellent speaker and very precise in his information and views on his job. He talked about the structure of the Coastguard and how it was manned. The following are some of the basic facts:
The Coastguard does not receive any government funding and is nearly
totally voluntarily run. Last year they had 5,300 assists, 204 involving
serious rescues and sinking boats. They rescued over $8 million worth of
boats, spent 317,000 man hours on the job as well as 150,000 hours of
radio watch. The Coastguard runs several courses including day skipper and
boat master. Over 10,000 people do their courses a year. Despite all the
good work they do the majority of boat owners do not belong to Coastguard. An excellent talk and all those club members with boats or go fishing on boats, who missed it, should kick themselves.
Stephen.
March Guest Speaker :
Brendon Mathews He has fished extensively in New Zealand but a special affinity with the Taupo region draws him to fish there more than 60 days a year. With regular season totals exceeding 400 fish, Brendon is in an excellent position to pass on many of the secrets learned from nearly 30 years experience fishing Taupo’s famous waters for rainbow and brown trout. In early 2001 he began sharing this knowledge with readers of the New Zealand Troutfisher magazine through his regular Taupo column ‘Rivers Run To It…’. More was to follow in 2002 when he appeared on TV3’s Gone Fishing show with Graeme Sinclair in a special feature on the growing popularity of jigging in Lake Taupo. Since then Brendon released his first book Volcanic Trout: A Complete Guide to Trout Fishing in the Taupo Region, in November 2003, which has received wide acclaim. He is also an award-winning photographer and many of his superb photographs have appeared in and on the cover of the Target Taupo magazine, on the 2003/2004 fishing licence, and in the Tongariro National Trout Centre at Turangi. Brendon has an intense enthusiasm for the Taupo fishery and has established himself as a leading expert in catching Taupo trout, regardless of the method or season.
